The Bahá’í Seven

In only hours the government of Iran plans to put on trial seven Bahá’í leaders for “spying for Israel, spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic and religious offenses”. Yesterday the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom called for the release of these Bahá’ís. Similarly the German parlimentary groups have produced similar condemnations.

For over 160 years Persia/Iran has not had a good relationship either Badis or Bahá’ís. Thousands have been executed for following the wrong religion.

I was hopeful for more government pressure on Iran from many countries. Instead, we’ll rely on prayers for the well being of these poor souls.

Propaganda

Wow… I have been ignoring a lot of propaganda lately.

Work will often send email to all the employees. A filter sends those to my propaganda folder. I only have 5 for the first three days of September and 11 for the first three days of October. Not a promising start.

Of course, it is election season, so both the DNC and GOP are asking for my vote.

Meetings, meetings, meetings, meetings.

Event invitations from all corners.

Need to hit reset in my brain and boot from ROM.

Blackboard’s Direct Help

I just noticed an item in Behind the Blackboard for “Direct Help”. This seems to be a way Blackboard is attempting to help students and parents find assistance by directing them to institutions. I probably missed the propaganda about this initiative. Though I do understand the problem and why it ought to be solved. People end up at Blackboard’s site asking for assistance with administrative items (passwords, changes to settings, etc.). Things the school ought to resolve… Not Blackboard.

Notre Dame, California State University – Chico, or California State University – Sacramento were schools I know but not easily found by me in the search. The ones I did were Georgia Southern University, Valdosta State University, University System of Georigia, and University of Western Ontario. None of those had it set up yet.

Sounds like I am in good company.

To set it up, one either gives them a link to use as a redirect or create a web page to provide information. Does anyone know of examples where someone has set it up?

OpenOffice Is Like Mikey

Remember the commercials for the cereal where the kids decide to give Mikey the stuff to see if he likes it? Someone sent me a WordPerfect document. Its been years since I got one of those. Office XP obviously doesn’t open it without scouring the Microsoft web site for the coverters.

Before subjecting myself to such propaganda, I thought, What about OpenOffice? Its open source, it should be able to open anything! Sure enough, it opened up the file! I keep meaning to make OO my default editor. I just don’t deal enough with Office documents except Excel to bother. Easily 95% of the files I directly edit are plain text files (logs, notes, SQL, scripts, etc.). None of those do well in a word processor which is for memos and letters.

Prayers

My heartfelt prayers go out to the Baha’is in Iran who are undergoing the latest wave of persecutions.

Iran’s Bahai Religious Minority Says It Faces Raids and Arrests – New York Times

Members of the Bahai religious minority in Iran said this week that the government had recently intensified a campaign of arrests, raids and propaganda that was aimed at eradicating their religion in Iran, the country of its birth.
