However, I got hung up on a misquote from a Walter Isaacson article\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/business\/article\/0,8599,1877191,00.html\">How to Save Your Newspaper<\/a> in\u00c2\u00a0TIME offering micropayments as the solution to newspapers finding a working model to survive since advertisements are not the right one.<\/p>\n<p>Mark said it was\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;information <strong>must <\/strong>be free.&#8221; TIME said, &#8220;[T]he\u00c2\u00a0Web got caught up in the ethos that information <strong>wants <\/strong>to be free.&#8221; Mark correctly attributed it to Steven Levy who said, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.georgetown.edu\/~denning\/hackers\/Hackers-NCSC.txt\">All information <strong>should<\/strong> be free<\/a>,&#8221; but in the context of: &#8220;Access to computers &#8212; and anything which might<br \/>\nteach you something about the way the world works &#8212; should be<br \/>\nunlimited and total.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Higher education provides such access. However, we hide the access behind beaucracy and tuition. Is it worth it?<\/p>\n<p>Another thought on all this came from a Dorothy E. Denning quoting Richard Stallman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I believe that all generally useful information should be free. By &#8216;free&#8217; I am not referring to price, but rather to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.georgetown.edu\/~denning\/hackers\/Hackers-NCSC.txt\">freedom to copy the information and to adapt it to one&#8217;s own uses<\/a>. &#8230; When information is generally useful, redistributing it makes humanity wealthier no matter who is distributing and no matter who is receiving.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This reminds me of the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/\">Creative Commons<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and open source. Restrictions to information like copyright ensure the creator makes money. At the same time copyright provides some opportunities for reusing it.
