In spoken words, I definitely lack that precision.<\/p>\n<p>Something that really annoys me is the use of the prefix &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/search?q=bi-\">bi-<\/a>&#8220;. This illustrates why:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since <span class=\"sc\">bi<\/span>&#8211; can be taken to mean either \u00e2\u20ac\u0153twice each\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153every two,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a word like <em>biweekly<\/em> can be understood as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153twice each week\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153every two weeks.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d To avoid confusion, it is better to use the prefix <span class=\"sc\">semi<\/span>&#8211; to mean \u00e2\u20ac\u0153twice each\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (<em>semiannual; semimonthly; semiweekly<\/em>) or the phrase <em>twice a<\/em> or <em>twice each <\/em>(<em>twice a month; twice a week; twice each year<\/em>), and for the other sense to use the phrase <em>every two<\/em> (<em>every two months; every two weeks; every two years<\/em>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Every time someone uses biweekly or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askoxford.com\/asktheexperts\/faq\/aboutwords\/bimonthly\">bimonthly<\/a>, we end up in a discussion over whether its &#8220;twice a&#8221; or &#8220;twice each&#8221; as people don&#8217;t understand it can be either.<\/p>\n<p>Ugh<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the reasons I prefer to communicate in writing is I often dwell on what I wish to say, refining the words to make the message clear and concise.
