Google Video EOL May 13, 2011

Google Video told me I have to move my videos before they delete them on May 13, 2011. They suggested Youtube (since Google owns Youtube). Instead of a button to move them all to Youtube with the titles, descriptions, and view counts intact, they gave me a link to my video status page where I can download my videos and start all over. I only used Google Video on the occasions where I had trouble with Youtube. So I only had eight videos to move. If I had 80, then I would be quite annoyed at having to download them all from Google Video, record all the titles and descriptions, and recreate all that on Youtube.

Anyway, here is a video I rescued. It is of dancers at the St. Philothea Greek Festival. A couple of friends were dancers. I am really disappointed with the quality. I should go look for the originals and repost those instead. Oh, of course there I have a Greek Festival Flickr photoset.

Gunfighters MC

Gunfighters MC
Gunfighters MC Georgia

Driving off from brunch downtown, I followed these three (well, five) for several miles. My motorcycle gang expertise being extremely limited, I used the power of Google to see just what notorious trouble these people have caused. Brawls? Drug dealing? Executions? Terrorism? Probably not Hell’s Angels league but there must be dozens of organizations from forking and the popularity of badassness.

Gunfighters MC appears to be:

Original Gunfighters MC World is a male only international retired and active law enforcement motor cycle club.

Oh.

It was definitely great weather for a bike ride.

In retrospect, yellow and blue do not really seem like the colors of someone seeking to intimidate.

P.S. The end scene of Ocean’s Thirteen where the beat up hotel rating guy wins a million dollars from Rusty’s playing the cheat code was filmed in front of the gate where my plane left Las Vegas from BbWorld in 2008. Maybe it is a sign I should go to BbWorld 2011 also in Las Vegas?

Apple Trying To Poach IE6 Users

Attempted to watch the Transformer’s 3 trailer, but apparently Chrome on Linux was a no-go for the JavaScript which hides the web site and displays the trailer. Fancy but broken. So I thought I would look at the HTML and get the .mov file. I found this snippet of code in the HTML quite interesting.

<!–[if lt IE 7]>
<div id=”ie6-message”>
<h2>You are currently using an outdated browser.</h2>
<p>Please upgrade to a <a href=”http://www.apple.com/safari/”>modern browser</a> to fully experience this site.<p>
</div>

Where most places would have someone upgrade to a newer version of the software they are currently using, Apple is trying to poach Microsoft users. Bravo! Bravo!

Watch Out For Sinkholes in Georgia

Back in 1994 a neighbor city, Albany, GA, experienced massive flooding. For a couple months after the waters receded, sinkholes opened up under houses and cars driving along roads in the formerly flooded areas. Waters filled underground caverns making them only stable with the water still in them. Without aboveground wanter coming down, these caverns dried and became unstable again.

Looks like in the Atlanta area sinkholes are starting to happen.

A sinkhole caused by the recent rain swallowed up a car and driver in Gwinnett County Saturday.
The sinkhole opened up at the intersection of West Liddell Road and Club Place earlier in the week.
Police blocked off the intersection, but someone moved the cones and the motorist drove right into the gaping hole early Saturday morning.
The driver suffered minor injuries, but the car is stuck in the deep hole.
Police have blocked off the intersection again.

I wonder why news agencies are not warning people to expect these might happen? Maybe the ground under Atlanta doesn’t have as many caverns compared to Albany so the danger is not as great? Hopefully it won’t take several of these for people catch on to the possibility.

Booing at Beckham

Sports are entertainment. Some watch it for the feats. Some like discussing tactics. Some just want to see scores. Some love the bloopers (aka mistakes).

The second you feel a sports player seen on television wronged you by a decision on or off the field (or court), it is time to turn off said TV. Even at the stadium when you feel the need to yell something at a player, stop. Just stop.

  1. When you get angry you are the one who lost.
  2. Deciding which team to play had nothing to do with pleasing or angering the audience. Getting angry over being irrelevant is not good for health.

Entertainment is about enjoyment. When it makes you angry, try another form of entertainment.

Superhero Economy

Watched a number of episodes of Justice League Unlimited today. Buildings, roads, and machines get pulverized by the violent actions. Someone rebuilds all the destroyed stuff because in the next episode, everything is pristine to get pulverized again. So much rebuilding must suck for insurance premiums. However, it does ensure lots of construction employment, material sales, structural engineering services, and designers.

🙂

… And you thought they were just weekend morning cartoons!

Blackboard iPhone App

People have been contacting me all day about the Blackboard iPhone App. Both Blackboard and the Chronicle of Higher Education posted blogs about its release.

I find it interesting Jessica mentioned a Georgia student is the inspiration in the Bb blog post. There are over 200,000 students in Georgia who cannot use this application because it relies on Blackboard Sync which only operates for Academic Suite (Classic) products. Blackboard says the Sync product isn’t available to the CE/Vista products used by all but a few schools in the University System of Georgia.

The odds are good the poor student who needs the app can’t use it.

Also, the USG is exactly the kind of client who Blackboard says should wait and see before migrating to Learn.

LC Oddities

IMS XML for Blackboard Vista 8:

Say Division1 exists. We want to create Group1 inside Division1. Ignore that Division1 already exists and write XML to create it again. Create Group1 with relationship tag info for Division1.

Starting with Group1 doesn’t work unless command-line overrides starting learning context to be Division instead of Group.

Luminis XML for Blackboard Vista 8:

Starting with Group1 fine because divisions are unsupported.

Don’t ever use Luminis XML as a model for IMS. Ever!

Better CE/Vista Web Server Log

Some support tickets are more easily solved by knowing both user behavior and environment. An often helpful piece of information is what web browser they used. To add this, shut down the cluster, edit /VISTA_HOME/config/config.xml to include the cs(User-Agent), and start the cluster. This line will need to appear for every node. At startup, the nodes will download a new copy of the file.

<elf-fields>date time time-taken c-ip x-weblogic.servlet.logging.ELFWebCTSession sc-status cs-method cs-uri-stem cs-uri-query bytes cs(User-Agent) x-weblogic.servlet.logging.E LFWebCTExtras</elf-fields>

Command:
cp config.xml config.xml.bak
sed -s s/bytes x-/bytes cs(User-Agent) x-/g config.xml.bak > config.xml

Probably this could be edited in the Weblogic 9.2 console. I haven’t looked yet.

Mail From Address

It appears CE/Vista has several locations for defining the email addresses it uses for SMTP.

  1. $WEBCTDOMAIN/config/config.xml:
    mail.from=
    From address for messages sent.
  2. $WEBCTDOMAIN/customconfig/startup.properties:
    WEBCT_ADMIN_EMAIL=
Some internal errors have a mailto: prompt to contact the server administrator.
  3. $WEBCTDOMAIN/serverconfs/log4j.properties:
    log4j.appender.EMail.To=
    Report fatal errors.
  4. $WEBCTDOMAIN/serverconfs/log4jstartup.properties:
    log4j.appender.EMail.To=
    Report fatal errors.
  5. $WEBCTDOMAIN/webctInstalledServer.properties:
    WEBCT_ADMIN_EMAIL=
Installer picks up this value for populating #2 and possibly #3 and #4.
  6. $WEBCTDOMAIN/webctInstalledServer.properties:
    MAIL_ORIGIN=
Installer picks up this value for populating #1.

What really disturbs me is the Vista 8 installer created log4j properties files with the  SMTP server set up for miles.webct.com and sending from vista.monitor@webct.com? I cannot seem to find anything in the Vista 8 documentation or wiki or Google index about the “Vista Trap Notification” subject line, from address, or SMTP address which the log4j appender appears to be designed to send.

This Vista Trap Notification appears designed to send an email to the address any time a fatal error is encountered. That’s fine. Just use the smtp host and From address requested in the installer.

Don’t get me started about giving end users a mailto: prompt to report errors.
