Another Nail in the Coffin of UNIX?

SGI – Services & Support: End of General Availability for MIPS® IRIX® Products:

SGI launched the MIPS IRIX family of products in 1988. Since then, this technology has powered servers, workstations, and visualization systems used extensively in Manufacturing, Media, Science, Government/Defense, and Energy. After nearly two decades of leading the world in innovation and versatility, the MIPS IRIX products will end their general availability on December 29, 2006.

Support will stick around until 2013? Still, another victory for Linux.

Six Month Review

Yesterday I had the opportunity to sit down with my supervisor. It looks like I am going to stick around here for the long term. From the start, people treated me as though I knew something despite my fear that I didn't know enough. I have contributed to the projects and picked up lots of skills. I still have a long way to go still with Oracle database administration.

I am happy to be working at a job I enjoy again.

QotD: Set Your DVR

What TV show(s) will you be watching this season? Why?
Submitted by ducnly.vox.com.

  • LOST – I am an addict
  • Battlestar Galactica – The miniseries was phenomenal, Season 1 even better, Season 2 was okay, so I am hoping they will make it up with Season 3.
  • Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – I liked the quit reparts of the West Wing. I didn't get onboard the show early enough. I did see the pilot of this new show by Aaron Sorkin.
  • ER – I've watched it for so long I don't know how to stop.
  • Grey's Anatomy – I started because I didn't have anything to watch at 10p on Sunday nights. Guess I am hooked?

QotD: It’s All In My Head

What movie can you quote by heart?
Submitted by clamhead.

Since Willow is my #1 movie, I know it backwards and forwards. I've seen it easily more than 20 times. As I kid, I watched it every few months. Even as an adult, I watch it about once ever year.

Probably as a kid if Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi were offered on HBO, then my grandmother would have recorded it via her VCR and they collectively would occupy the #1 spot. Bad move, George. Which reminds me. NOW you release the original versions. Anyone want my non-original versions so I can buy the original theatrical releases which just came out on DVD?

QotD: This Is When I’m At My Best

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

When I was young, I was sooo much of a morning person. Even on a few hours sleep, I felt great. Now, I need at least 7 hours sleep to feel great the next morning. Predicated on that, I feel great in the morning!

All too often I stay up way later than I should. I can stay up 20 hours and totally throw off my normal sleep schedule. Staying up late is reserved for the weekend.

QotD: I’m Crafty

What's the last thing you crafted, constructed or created yourself?

Hmmmmm… I'm not really a physical crafting kinda guy. I mostly deal with virtual things on the computer: photography, web sites, software. In the six months of my new job, I have not even been in the room where my 60 or so servers reside.

Well, I recently created several recorded sessions of using various web applications. These will be used to throw traffic load at these services to see whether or not the web application can handle the impact.
