The National Federation of the Blind is upset about a movie portraying people who are blind as behaving badly.

Pyyhkala, 36, of Boston, said he has read the book and seen parts of the film. He said his grievances stem from the film’s potential to sway public attitude about blindness. He said the movie exacerbates stereotypes and gives false information to uninformed viewers. [Link] (Since starting this post now requires a login?)

I haven’t seen the film or read the book, but the trailer for the films shows the people being put into quarrantine for a medical epidemic where people go blind. Stories generally portray people as acting incompetent and fearful when they are trapped in an unfamiliar situation. The whole point is to create an environment whereby a person, the hero or heroine, who is the bright light of reason and to whom everyone else appeals can rise to the challenge.

Blindness happens to use people who are blind, most likely because a the author was trying to be creative and use something readers would find new. Jose Saramago: ”Stupidity doesn’t choose between the blind and the non-blind.” [Link]

Chris Danielsen, a national federation spokesman, said while he understands that the film plays on the public’s fear of sudden blindness, the idea that loss of sight is equal to incompetence and immorality is “outrageous” and “vicious.” Everyday tasks like getting dressed and using the bathroom do not become impossible if a person loses their sight, Danielsen said.

Works of fiction do not depict reality. Otherwise… they would not be fiction. Stop giving movies more meaning than they actually have. Otherwise, you give them power they didn’t already have.

The Catholic Church’s opposition to the Golden Compass made me read the book and go see the movie (latter was awful). I wouldn’t have cared otherwise. Denouncing it made me wonder what they had to fear from something so silly as a book and movie. After seeing the trailer, I wasn’t interested in Blindness. After reading about the opposition, I am interested. I don’t have much luck with movies from books lately, so I may go book first.

So now I am home and killing time before doing the maintenance for work tonight. At least that will be short. I won’t even get to catch up much on TiVo like last week’s (10pm to 2am).

arfore has cool Music Video Friday series at his real blog.

I’ve been thinking about playing with the Firefox 3 Beta.

I really want a legitimate (pays the studios) copy of Macross Zero. All I’ve seen in US stores are obvious pirated copies. Why do the companies make it so hard to play by the rules?

What do you use for RSS feeds? I’ve used Bloglines, GReader, FeedDemon, NewsGator, BlogBridge, Firefox Livemarks, and Thunderbird. Lately I have taken to playing with Feedreader 3. So far it seems the best.

Buying CDs seems really scary these days….

The complaint alleges that XCP violates a number of Italy’s computer security laws by causing damage to users’ systems and by acting in the same way as malicious software, according to Andrea Monti, chair of the ALCEI-EFI. “What Sony did qualifies as a criminal offense under Italian law,” he said.
Police Called In To Investigate Sony

Why would I want to buy something that is going to mess up my computer? It sounds easier to just not buy any CDs at all than to figure out which ones are good and which ones are bad. My computers are my only CD players. So if I cannot trust putting audio CDs in them, then there is no reason to buy CDs.

It sounds like my decision to go to iTunes was a good one. At least there I can burn them to a non-destructive audio CD at some point.

My friends out there who have purchased CDs recently may wish to check that their anti-spyware software will check for this and possibly remove it. They should also seek out the fix on the Sony web site.

Oh I believe in yesterday.Suddenly, There’s not half the files there used to be,
And there’s a milestone hanging over me.
The system crashed so suddenly.

I pushed something wrong
What it was I could not say.
Now all my data’s gone and I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay.

Yesterday, The need for back-ups seemed so far away.
I knew my data was all here to stay,
Now I believe in yesterday.

Campus is crazy. This is Welcome Week, specifically the dorms open today, so all the parking spaces are taken. People are parked on the curb. Normal entrances to the university are block off by Public Safety and Parking.

Had a meeting to go to at 10… was 15 minutes late because I could not get off campus even when I left 10 minutes early. I could have walked there in 10 minutes.

- – - – -

How about this coversation…

[15August2001 - 15:18PM] Le Corbeau: Sneez from which movie is this line? “its a .88 magnum. It shoots through schools”
15August2001 – 15:19PM] sneezy: dunno… let me research the quote
[15August2001 - 15:22PM] sneezy: Johnny Dangerously (1984)
[15August2001 - 15:22PM] sneezy: Danny Vermin: I got something to stop him. Dutch: They made it for him special. It’s an eighty-eight Magnum. Danny Vermin: It shoots through schools.

- – - – -

Remember the Random Elizabethan Curse Generator? Wow… remember seeing this back in 96 or 97!! Thanks Le Corbeau!

Maybe that is showing how much of an old fart I am for this Internet stuff. I got started hardcore back in the tail end of 1995 and have been going strong. My first internet experience was actually the summer before… Netscape 1.0 on a 14.4 dial-up modem.

By the by… Netscape 6.1 is better than Netscape 6.0, but am having problems. First, can’t force a login to Netcape Internet Messenger so I can’t use that. Older javascripts which anticipate Netscape’s old style do not work. Stuff like that. If they hang in there another year and can beef up usage to the point the web designers like me care, then maybe just maybe… Netscape will make a come back.

Don’t hold your breath.

Three weeks ago, my grandmother was in London. She never drives her car faster than 35 so I took it out on the highway to get the carborator to burn off some buildup. Took the long way to Tally, but when I got there I spent an couple hours at Governor’s Square Mall. Found the first 2 Robotech DVDs First Contact and Transformation. Now I am online getting number 3 Homecoming and Battlefront which become available tomorrow. Probably will have to buy the Volume 1 box set just to get that 3rd DVD. If I’d know that there was a box set, then I would have waited. Of course, I should have thought about it and realized there would be a box set.

My bro is going to burn me a CD with some of his MP3s. This should include some of his Robotech stuff. Got some of these songs on Morpheus recently. Some pretty nice stuff. I am big fan of stuff off soundtracks. Don’t know why… maybe because I can visualize it? Didn’t care for Push It until Gran Turismo 2 had it as background music.

Wow I get too much email… downloading 518 messages from just one account.
