Unplugged for the Holidays

How to spend a long holiday weekend - Lifehacker:
Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, most likely you’ve got the day off this coming Monday. I hope you’ll spend it doing as little as possible.Forget the email, the IM, the RSS feeds, the Google searches, what Wikipedia has to say about the origins of Christmas, installing that latest Firefox update or running a defrag. Unplug and enjoy. You made it through another year and you’re wiser, more experienced and best of all - you’re alive. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done, spend some good quality face time with the people you love, and have a very merry happy festive unplugged weekend. We know we will. Happy holidays to you and yours from all of us here at Lifehacker.
LOL, I unplugged for Thanksgiving (more because I didn’t bring a charger for the lappy) back at home. It was near withdrawl! Yikes. So I haven’t for Christmas.
I’m spending quality time with the family. They are on their computers too!

Apparently mom has fluorescent lamps and not Tungsten as I assumed. So the camera setting for adjusting for Tungston light made the shot way too blue. However, I do like the effect.

Criminal Scholarships
Filed Under Computers, University | Leave a Comment
The BBC article doesn’t say whether this is a UK only thing, but this is just scary. If it is a US phenomenon as well, then I wonder how many college students are being paid to go to school? On the one hand, the students are getting an education. On the other, the students will be committing crimes when they finish the degree.
“As the number of criminal gangs looking to move into cyber crime expanded, it got harder to recruit skilled hackers, said Mr Day. This has led criminals to target university students all around the world. “Some students are being sponsored through their IT degree,” said Mr Day. Once qualified, the graduates go to work for the criminal gangs.” Criminals ‘target tech students’
How many college students truly know and understand the source of money funding their education. Mine? The poor of my state wasted an unhealthy percentage of their wages on the lottery some of which went to funding my education. The kicker? Many of my college friends who didn’t get good grades funded their education through loans spent $10-$50 a month on lottery tickets. Thankfully perhaps only a few cents of the money I get actually came from them.
[UPDATE:] Apparently, college students will even get married to get money.

Your Cell Phone Is the FBI’s Bug

For all my criminal wannabe friends. Where you can talk without being overheard is becoming smaller and smaller. Its starting feeling like a Sci-Fi novel.
FBI using cell phone microphones to eavesdrop:
Cell phones are capable of providing more information about us and our whereabouts than we usually realize. We are have long since known that cell phones can be used to track users’ locations, but now the FBI has begun using them for eavesdropping—even when they are turned off.
From the referenced article, the part that bothers me:
An article in the Financial Times last year said mobile providers can “remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner’s knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call.”

Sorry I’ve neglected this site.
- Work has keep me pretty occupied.
- TiVo rules my life.
- New city and things to do have kept me out of the house more than normal.
- I’ve found some pretty good places to blog.
- People read blogs now.
Some suggestion:
- Visit my Flickr photos.
- Visit my Livejournal blog (mostly Friends only)
- Visit my del.icio.us bookmarks.
The above are social web sites, so you will have a chance to interact with me. Though, I am sure my stalkers will continue to study and lurk. I’m all over the Internet. If you can’t find me, then you are not looking!
