To Dos

I think I have reached the point I have forgotten more projects I am supposed to do in the past 3 months than I have actually completed.

Fortunes Found on My Desk

In no particular order:

  • Your greatest fortune is the large number of friends you have.

  • Pray for what you want, but work for the things you need.

  • Don't expect romantic attachments to be strictly logical or rational!

UPDATE corrected spelling of "Fortune".

Student Expelled Over Diary?

In the infamous fiasco that can be called my high school career, I have written about both killing myself and killing a teacher. At the time, I was the kind of student that sought to shock and appall teachers for which I did not hold dear.

Post-Columbine and other school shootings, I think I would have been one of the students to get expelled for not having a good head on my shoulders. Would never kill anyone, but I have been stupid enough to provoke arguments, write stupid things, and wear black teeshirts every day.

The poem I wrote about killing myself resulted in a trip to the guidance counselor. She took an interest in making sure that I would not kill myself. Years of manipulating psychologists made her an unwitting victim to the mind games I played back then.

The story I wrote about killing a teacher was an afterthought to a really boring story about a field trip. At the time I was irritated at the assignment (and being placed in the class against my wishes). Where the story had been sanitary and uneventful, suddenly it had action, detail, and drama. Probably that was the best piece of writing, I had ever composed in my entire high school career. That was not turned in as part of the assignment, but after I graduated I did let her read it after prefacing it was not directed at her. She thought it was great writing. Much better than any of the crap I had turned in to her.

Do I regret writing those pieces? Not really. I think writing is an important tool. While writing is an expression of the author, we place too much time and energy delving into the deeper meaning of something. Not everything has simply understood meaning.

At the time, my poem and story were meant to shock and awe my teacher. One was extremely successful. The other impressed. Go figure.

Back

Geeks In The Woods was a blast. Guess tomorrow I will have to figure out how to do my job again?

Took a few pics. Nothing that would really interest anyone that reads this.

Really enjoyed meeting other IT professionals from around the System. Many of us are apparently struggling with the same issues. What they have learned in fixing these problems probably will save me some headache when I have to tackle the same problems.

Geeks In The Woods (AGAIN)

Awesome to get away from the office and play with computers. I mean... uh... learn about computers. Yeah... that is it. hehehehe

Gotta go get a cookie now, I think. Maybe will be back online later. Wait... who am I kidding? Might not even come back online for hours.

Perceptions

In high school, I was not really sure whether or not I existed. Many of the really stupid things I did were in order to get attention whether positive or negative. That lasted well into college... wait, still do them today. :( Just better now. :)

Have found that people give me better attention now than I feel I used to get. Not sure where that change occurred. Have a feeling the change has more to do with me noticing the attention and not some overall change in everyone else. This is only because I conceptualize everyone changing where I have not. Dunno. Definitely a good thing and should probably not overanalyze it. Just want things to remain good.

Next thing I need to solve is my facial expressions. On that end, I am like a mute. People keep asking whether or not I am having a good time. My face is expressionless or negative while I am having a good time.

Weekend Whirlwind

Trying to help with the planning and shaping of the upcoming reunion. Going to be interesting working with these women I still think of as girls. Work got side tracked into discussions of kids, losing baby weight, etc. Nothing to which I object, but as the only guy there it makes them uncomfortable they might be making me uncomfortable. In the end, I enjoy seeing people and noting the changes whether good or bad. Never really hated many people from high school or college. So seeing them, many of them after 10 years will be awesome.

Got to hear a pretty good Jazz band Fri night. Lost several games of pool. Will get over it.

Saw Mystic River and Lost in Translation. LiT was really kick a-- even with people throwing wrappers at me all throughout. Japan is visually beautiful; Bill Murray is hilarious. Looking forward to Matrix Revolutions and Return of the King.

Snitch

Occasionally, I run across web sites and emails which are definitely fraud. What kinds of site? Well, the first example I recognized claimed to be AOL lost the user's credit card information so the account would be canceled unless the user updates it. Naturally, AOL probably does not really need the user's Social Security Number, date of birth, mother's maiden name, bank, and bank account / pin.

One side of me wants to report every one of em to the FBI to see the creator and owner rot in the worst Federal Penitenuaries they can find.. Another side figures the FBI probably is building a case already.

Got an email last week claiming that money was charged to my credit card because I am a money launderer. In order to get it back I should enter my CC number and expiration date. Rrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiigggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhttttttttttttttttt... I got it at 6 different email addresses so it probably was out there to a heck of a number of people. So I found the FBI tip site and let em know about that one.

Got a reply this morning that their Cyber Division knew about this particular one already and the tip line really is for terrorist related tips.

Maybe I should go work for this Cyber Division? That would be interesting work to say the least.

Why I Read What I Do

This one is for Eks...There are so many stories he does not know. Hopefully this one will make his head spin.

  • History (esp. War & Politics) -
My father might get the blame for this one, albeit indirectly. My mother, of course, is definitely at fault. Before even of schooling age, my mom took me to the library. There is not much a young kid can do. Running, yelling, and other random acts of hellions are pretty much not tolerated. So I ended up reading... A lot. During the summer, my father did not want us running the air conditioning. In South Georgia weather, this is just cruel. So we went to the library for hours upon hours.

My elementary school was across the street from the public library as well. Almost every afternoon was spent there until my mom could get off work and come get me.

Of all the books in the public library, my favorites were about famous (American won) battles in the Pacific Ocean. I can't count how many times I read those books.

  • Science (esp Space) and Science Fiction Novels -
My next favorite books were about space exploration. The movie Black Hole made me love space and its exploration. Until high school, my hope was to become an aerospace engineer and design the next generation nuclear powered vessels to reach another star system.

Science Fiction is really the prediction of Science Fact. The stories involving ships, military and political maneuvering, and epic battles are the ones that captured my attention.

  • Fantasy Novels -
For Christmas 1987 my aunt (a true Geek and probably my role-model), gave me a set of books that would forever change my life. No, not an inspiring biography, a literary masterpiece, or other such drivel. She gave me the the first 3 books of the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. It hooked me on the fantasy genre and never let go.

  • Combinations of these are even better. That twist seems to improve upon the story somehow. Examples:
    • A Song of Fire and Ice -
Fantasy setting heavy in telling the history of Westeros and showing truly cutthroat politics,
    • Camulod Chronicles -
      Arthurian revisionist history,
    • Heritage Trilogy -
Science fiction novel based on a political nightmare - U.S./Russia vs. U.N., evidence of aliens breeding humans discovered on Mars, or
    • stories about ancient political figures.
Spun yet?

No Pants Dream

Interesting dream last night...

Woke up to the radio playing, but it was still kinda dark outside. So I go, take a shower and go back to my room to get dressed. The pants I thought were supposed to be laying out were missing. Weird. So I looked in the closet. Nothing. WTF? Looked everywhere, but could not find one pair of pants. Shorts of all kinds, even shorts I do not own were everywhere.

Finally, I just got back in bed and went back to sleep. Not like I really wanted to go to work anyway.

That dream made it weird to attempt to wake up. Was not sure whether the buzzing alarm was part of the dream or real.

Sound Like Me?

Ran across yet another personality test... Don't think I like the results.

  • Ambitious; wants to be in charge; likes to have and wield influence
  • Very decisive; in a hurry; very high sense of urgency
  • A risk-taker; likes excitement
  • Enjoys challenging projects and tasks
  • Likes to be creative, innovate
  • Intends to be open and accommodating, tends to be rigid and uncompromising
  • Sees self as encouraging but more likely critical of others
  • Wants to be patient and helpful, tends to be impatient, distracted
  • Sees self as empathic to others, tends to be self-absorbed
  • Sees self as cooperative, but not generally the profile of a team player
  • Enthusiastic, energetic _ _ _ a fervent believer and promoter
  • Unconventional, non-conforming, rebellious
  • Confident, often optimistic
  • Likes to think; likes to find and solve problems; likes to learn
  • Likes to laugh, clever, can be quick-witted
  • Intends to be a good listener to others, tends to be preoccupied with own agenda
  • Very assertive, can be argumentative, adversarial

UPDATE: Think in general, I agree with the analysis. Many of these traits I perceive as negative which makes me less than perfect. For a conceited mind, this is bad.

Conspiracy Theory

Salon got me thinking....

The $87 billion to be spent on Iraq ostensibly is very military, right? Over $50 billion to continue military operations sounds pretty military. Yet it also has over $25 billion in societal building components like water treatment plants, hospitals, schools, and prisons.

Something just struck me a few minutes ago. Saddam Hussein is in hiding, right? He probably is the worst thug we have ever put into power. Pure evil does not equivocate to complete idiocy. He is not insane. Rather, he is a cold, calculating despot willing to take risks and long shots at success. Fight the war, but when the war is lost? Run. Hide. By all means do not stick your head out of your hole into the open until the coast is clear.

From your secret hiding spot, taunt your enemies into staying there. Why? Because you need them to stay. Their best way of defeating you is make the people like them better. Iraqi people do not relate well to American people, especially while the Americans hold the guns (aka power) and keep the guns out of Iraqi hands. However, what better way for the wealthiest nation in the world to get the trust and friendship of the Iraqis than to buy it? Build them societal infrastructure. In essence, the Americans rebuild the country.

In 2 - 4 years, Iraq could be on its way to becoming a major player in the Middle East again. However, they will not love the Americans any more than they do now. This makes Iraq ripe for a power-hungry former dictator like Saddam Hussein to take over (again).

Hopefully, this is all wrong. I'd hate to successfully have predicted this.

Annoying Watch

Every time I lose too much weight my watch becomes annoying by moving around on my wrist. It just cannot seem to stay in the right place. Instead of resizing the band, I stop wearing the watch.

Eventually, I will gain the weight back and all will be right again.

Stupid Windows Update

Microsoft released an update to Windows Media Player. Before this update, the ability to post music playing worked in w.Bloggar. After this update, the ability to post music playing seems compromised. The last song I posted is the only one that shows.

Is this Microsoft's version of "bad" means "good", but "good" does not mean "bad"? When you update to "fix" something, the program is really broken not fixed.
